What gum disease is
Gum disease affects the tissues that support your teeth. It often starts with inflamed gums, but more advanced disease can affect the bone underneath.
Gingivitis is the early stage. Plaque along the gum line irritates the gums, which may become red, swollen or bleed. It is often reversible with professional cleaning and consistent home care, before the supporting bone is affected.
Periodontitis is more advanced. Gums can pull away from the teeth and pockets form where bacteria collect. Bone support can be lost and teeth may loosen. Cleaning at home alone cannot remove tartar deep in these pockets. A dental examination helps distinguish the stages; symptoms do not tell the whole story.
Signs
Signs to look out for
- Bleeding when brushing or flossing, especially if it keeps happening
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste
- Gums pulling back, making teeth look longer
- Sensitivity around exposed tooth roots
- Teeth that feel loose or move
- A change in how your teeth meet when you bite
Worth knowing
Don't stop brushing.
Bleeding gums can make people brush less — but gentle, thorough brushing is usually part of the answer. Ask your dentist how.
Common causes and risk factors
Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria on teeth. If it is not removed regularly, it can harden into tartar that brushing cannot shift. Crowded teeth and hard-to-clean areas can make build-up more likely. Missed check-ups may allow gum problems to go unnoticed.
Smoking increases the risk of gum disease. Diabetes, hormonal changes including pregnancy, and some medicines can also affect gum health. Tell your dentist about your health conditions, medicines and any pregnancy. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice from the clinician who prescribed it.
Your visit
How we check your gums
- 1
Discuss your symptoms
Your dentist asks about bleeding, sensitivity, your cleaning routine and relevant medical history.
- 2
Examine the gums
They look for inflammation, recession and build-up, and may measure the pockets around your teeth.
- 3
X-rays if needed
X-rays may help assess the bone supporting your teeth. Your dentist explains whether they are needed.
- 4
Explain the findings
You hear what was found, the recommended care and its cost before deciding on treatment.
Treatment options
For early gum problems, professional cleaning (scaling and polishing) removes plaque and tartar. More advanced problems may need deeper cleaning below the gum line. Your dentist will explain what is appropriate after checking your gums; a routine cleaning package is not a substitute for that assessment.
Regular follow-up visits help your dentist check how your gums respond and whether further cleaning is needed. Home-care advice supports treatment between visits. The plan and cleaning interval depend on your gum health, rather than one schedule for everyone.
Looking for a periodontist in Dubai?
At Easy Dental, gum checks and gum treatment are carried out by our DHA-licensed general dentists rather than a specialist periodontist. Dentists whose profiles include gum care are Dr Khadeeja Sulaiman (13 years of experience) and Dr Aiswarya (around 5 years). They explain the stage of any gum disease and the care you need, including deeper cleaning below the gum line where it's needed.

Looking after your gums at home
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, gently cleaning along the gum line. Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes suited to the spaces. Your dentist can show you a technique that works for your mouth.
Avoid smoking and keep up with regular check-ups and cleans. Do not ignore recurring bleeding or wait for pain: gum disease can develop with little discomfort. Arrange a gum check if you notice persistent changes.
